I appreciate your help with the Compaq computer. It is not booting up now and sometimes it beeps. Last Saturday I managed to start it in Safe Mode using an XP boot disk in CD-Rom and the computer ran fine for 16 hours while I made a Windows Movie Maker film, the I decided to shut it down and it would not restart.

This doesn't sound good at all.

Have you made sure all the fans are working in the computer?

Have you tried Last Known Good Configuration?

Is the recovery console installed?

How far along does it get when it boots?

Let me know.....MrC

Hello MrCharlie,
Yes the fans are working. The last time I reached safe mode menu which was one week ago, I noticed that "Last Known Good Configuration" was one of the options available in addition to some other options, one of which was "safe mode" which was the one I chose that finally got windows xp up and running. XP has not been running since then. It is very difficult now to get to safe mode menu. The recovery console is installed.
How far along does it get when it boots? The last time it responded, I got to safe mode menu, chose safe mode, then Windows XP acted like it was going to work from the appearance on the video screen of the logo swirling around, then my Compaq screen showed a couple of small blocks of color and froze.
My attempt before that attempt ended up with Windows XP desktop appearing and loading then the system froze and desktop still appeared on the screen but no response from mouse cursor.
I now have the "DDS.scr by sUBs" loaded to a flash drive so that I can attempt to run it if the Compaq will get Windows XP running...

I appreciate your help.

If you have the recovery console installed, try to run > CHKDSK

Link below explains:

Good place to start,   MrC

Dear MrCharlie,
I got into Recovery Console, the computer ran for about one minute and then stopped working. I turned it off. Then, I turned it on and tried to reboot in safe mode, then I saw "Last Known Good Configuration" and chose it. My Compaq computer video screen showed Windows XP logo for about 15 seconds, then the video screen froze up and computer stopped responding. I turned it off.
I turned it back on. The computer beeped over and over. Again, I turned the computer off. Then, I turned the computer back on and it beeped over and over.
If I unplug the power cord from the back of the computer and wait for about 10 minutes, then the computer will not beep the first time I press the on button. At that time the computer might give me a chance to enter safe mode by pressing F8 once a second until safe mode menu appears.
9 days ago I ran CHKDSK the last time Windows XP Home Edition was operating properly and it was good. Also during the course of that day, I fully updated XP to SP3 and all security updates, etc. were installed which required me to click on the "restart" computer now button to keep installing all of the many updates. My Compaq restarted everytime then.
So, anyway, at this time my computer will not go into safe mode, then it will start beeping after a few attempts at booting up.

Once again, your help is greatly appreciated.

Today I got the computer to boot up Windows XP in safe mode, then let it sit there for one hour while I ran an errand. When I returned the computer was still running XP in safe mode, so I chose to use system restore to Friday, January 20, 2012, 7:14:16 A.M. which was a restore point I created after SP3 was full loaded and also Avira Anti-virus was loaded and had completed a full system scan on January 20. At that time it had detected one item and had quarantined it. So I chose that system restore point, the computer briefly acted like it was going to function properly, then it stopped working, the fans are blowing and the main hard drive light is on which I think means it is turning and the video screen is black. I turned off the computer then turned it back on and it beeps. I can only get the computer to go to safe mode when I use a boot disk in the CD-ROM.

If you think it's malware related you could create an AVG Rescue CD and scan the system:

You'll find info on making it about 2/3s the way down at this post:

The beeps sound like they're from the motherboard:

Hello MrC,
My computer crashes now when I enter safe mode menu and choose start windows in safe mode, then 30 seconds later it crashes. If I choose start windows normally it crashes in the same way. Last known good configuration doesn't do any good either. Perhaps this is a hardware problem as you suggested. Since I cannot decipher the beep numbers, I ought to invest in a computer repair kit and install a post diagnostic test card so that I can just read the code and identify the problem. I almost understand electricity and respect its power as I use to troubleshoot HVAC systems for 12 years. This forum process has been a good learning experience for me and I appreciate your help very much. If and when I buy the necessary tools and get the computer running again, then I will post another update.

OK, let me know.

I use to have a small business servicing home central a/c systems myself. I used to work at nights and on weekends, I enjoyed it very much, the only problem was the first hot day you got slammed with calls. Nobody believed in maintaining their systems. The years I did it, I didn't have any complaints and everyone was satisfied with my work.
After some back problems I had to stop doing it though.

I'm here for any help you need, just let me know,  MrC
