I have no idea what really happened but I still find this interesting; http://www.betabeat.com/2012/02/21/scroogle-privacy-first-search-engine-shuts-down-for-good/ & http://www.betabeat.com/2012/02/15/scroogle-may-have-been-a-victim-of-hackers-not-google/

Seems to be a good alternative; https://www.startpage.com

top of his list was
duckduck go

works pretty good
i use linux and have less troubles as a windows system
and on linux mint it is the default search engine on firefox
free and seems to work pretty good

just for info
linux mint is not "hardcore linux at all" you can try it on a "live cd" that will not write anything to your system and you can check it out and make sure all works ( can't really install drivers for video and wifi if needed but will tell you if available to install)
as far as ease of use
i took one of my test boxes and gave it to a little old lady so she can get e-mail and listen to one religious show, now she uses gmail and can burn and rip to a cd and play back the shows
any questions about linux, just PM me ( i am not a heavyweight) on it but i do know it has no idea what a ".exe" is and a good firewall and you do all your work as "user" not admin
and has open source programs for about anything you use
all is "free like in beer"
