In the UK, under the Reintroduction of Investigatory Powers Act (R.I.P.Act) it is a criminal offence not to keep the password and pass phrases you have used for ALL cryptographic programs (PGP, GnuPG, Coolfish, CryptMail, etc.) in a place and a form where they can be easily found and used.[p]This is because the authorities (ie. the Police, MI5, Special Branch) might at any time want to obtain the passwords and passphrases.[p]The official advice is not to delete or revoke any keys or passwords/passphrases and keep them in a text file on your computer in clear text format.[p]Failure to comply with this COULD lead to an extra 2 years imprisonment added on to whatever prison sentence you get.[p]Needless to say, I have ignored this.  By doing so, I have committed a criminal act.  I am therefore a criminal.

Well, should I ever go visit/emigrating to the UK that I should also "flip the birdy" at the PTB's, so to speak. I mean, like, hey, I'm actually gonna help them fiddle around on my system and find things I don't want people finding. I mea, get real.

HI Graham - I'm new here (obviously) but i have to say that that sounds like the most insane policy or law i've ever heard passed.

Out of curiousity - was that info posted somewhere on a newsite or similar? We're moving onto security more indepth in my course next month and i wouldn't mind keeping that info on hand for future reference.

That is one of the most illconcived laws I have ever heard of concerning any use of personal encryption or passwords. What kind of drugs must they be on to come up something with that.?

Umm, those of you from the USA are evidently unaware of the Patriot Act, or that Bush our idiot leader thinks it is just fine and dandy to wiretap any and all he considers a risk to security.  Yep that's right from the same guy that was ready to hand over port control to the United Arab Emirates.  Don't kid yourself about privacy in this country.

The present political climate, both here and abroad has prompted me to increase my use of file encryption. Leave the keys posted where anyone can find them?? Sure. They're all in this huge random text file. They'll have to decide just which sections of which lines to cut and paste in as passwords. Hundreds of lines,  tens of thousands of random characters. Enjoy. I complied. The law didn't say I had to show them how to use it. After all, they're experts, right?
