hi i am not a expert ! ( far from it )
best bet would go to their forum
most distros have great forums and they know their system!

i used Ubuntu and gnome dialer
another great program for setting up a modem is "kppp"

but best to post on the forum of the distro you are using as each one is a bit different on how they do things and where files are at  !
most external modems will work fine, but if a USB it is trouble!
are you using a live cd or is it installed?

http://www.ubuntu.com/

note they have a great support form !!!
might go there and do a search for usb modems and sure there is a lot of help !!!!!

\version 6.06 is long term support ( dapper dan) and it had the easiest on the getting to configure the dialup !!!!
and here is a link that you might find usefull ?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DialupModemHowto

and here
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DialupMod...neralDiscussion

i used ubuntu on a dialup for a year but with the deals i went to hispeed ( $5/month more)

you can use it as a live cd, and it will work, and if you want to install it , it even has a guided wizzard for making your system dual boot or just a ubuntu !
the basic distro will have about all the software you would need too hehehe
open office, firefox gimp, and with add/remove you have easy access to hundreds more great programs!
or synptic and all the debs you will ever need ;-D

here are a few basic screenshots and i mean basic !
http://debianadmin.com/copper/displayimage.php?pos=-874

it comes with a pre configured firewall and you can easly install a a/v if you want to ?

and a basic wiki of Ubuntu
